important for everyone to practice good dental hygiene.

But that education starts early on.

Reporter Amber Schatz sits in with 2nd graders, brushing up on their dental health.

"I see some of you have lost some teeth." They're at a good age to brush up on dental hygiene

(Elizabeth Goodhart/2nd grade) "Fruits and vegetables are good, skittles and candy are bad." From what they put in their mouth... To their daily routine... Dental team members from Ideal Image Dentistry are teaching around 300 students this month what they can do for their teeth

(Nora Griffin/Dental Hygienist) 50:02 "They do some of brushing and flossing, they know what it is, whether they do the right technique I'm not sure, and we go over the technique." Dental hygienists want these students to get into the habit of practicing good oral hygiene..

And they're fighting plaque and cavities through education students might not be getting otherwise

"We do ask the question, how many teeth they have in their mouth, that's very surprising, it can be anywhere from 20 to 100 I think somebody said yesterday." Most second graders have seen a dentist before... but many still need reminders for the whole family on what's okay to eat all the time... or just some of the time

"Sometimes are the snacks that are probably sticky, stick to your teeth, stick to the grooves, pits in your teeth, and if you're not brushing or flossing them out regularly, or even right after you eat, they sit there for a long time and that's what causes decay." Knowledge they hope will stick

"Brush twice a day, floss once a day, rinse once a day, eat good snacks." (Elizabeth Goodhart/2nd grade) "Brush your teeth twice a day, floss at least once." And leave kids' teeth smiling bright... Amber Schatz, KX News...>

Prudential Financial Inc. said Wednesday that its group insurance business will start offering dental coverage plans later this year.

The plans will be offered in partnership with Group Dental Service Inc., based in Rockville, Md.

Lori High, president of Prudential's group insurance business, said the offering meets "growing interest among employers to bundle dental insurance along with life, disability, and long-term care insurance."

Prudential said it will start by offering dental plans to companies with plans covering less than 1,000 employees, then eventually expand the offering to larger plans.

Prudential expects to start offering quotes in the second quarter of the year for business starting in the third quarter.

Shares of Prudential added 40 cents to $50.33 in afternoon trading.

RENO, NV - Pediatric dentists with extensive training in addition to normal dental school, have some advice for parents and their children.

Pediatric dentists want to make more parents aware of the importance of taking children to the dentist before their first birthday. Dental decay is the most common childhood disease, five times more common than Asthma. That's why dentists say, parents should start preventative maintenance with their children early.

Dr. Nicole Stoker with The Smile Shop in Reno says, "The earlier we start, the better chance we have at educating parents." Early tooth loss due to decay can lead to problems with the positioning of adult teeth. That's why Dr. Stoker wants more parents to bring their kids in to see her. She says establishing dental care at an early age helps kids form good habits, and most dental issues can be avoided with a few simple steps.

Dr. Stoker advises eliminating the use of night time bottles and sippy-cups, and making sure children are getting enough fluoride. The Smile Shop makes visiting the dentist as painless as possible for children by offering video games, books, and prizes for good behavior and good dental hygiene.

"The kids come here and they see other kids doing the same things. I think it's just a lot more comforting environment." Dr. Stoker adds, if a pediatric dental patient is more comfortable going to the dentist, they're more likely to maintain good lifelong dental habits.

Previous research has shown a link between breastfeeding and decreased risk of childhood leukemia, however, a new study reveals that long-term breastfeeding may decrease the risk of leukemia and lymphoma even more than breastfeeding for just a few months.

The study showed that breastfeeding for less than six months was associated with an odds ratio of 2.79 for contracting a lymphoid malignancy compared with children breastfed longer than six months.

Researchers from the United Arab Emirates University compared 117 children with various forms of lymphoma and leukemia who were treated at the same hospital between 1983 and 1997 to a 117-member control group of healthy children matched by age and sex. All children in the study were Bedouin Arabs.

A report on the researchers' findings appears in the January 2001 edition of the European Journal of Cancer. The researchers say that with this study and others, the protective effect of longer breastfeeding against childhood leukemia and lymphomas is now more firmly established.

ST. GEORGE - More than 100 people lined up to see the dentist Saturday, and didn't pay a dime for the visit.

While most people rue getting a tooth pulled or having a cavity filled, many of the people waiting their turn in the parking lot at Riverside Dental Care were smiling and sharing a few laughs.

The group was taking advantage of the opportunity to get one of three dental services free as part of Dentistry With A Heart, the clinic's annual effort to give something back to the community as a show of goodwill.

Some of the patients who arrived early to secure an appointment with the first-come, first-served nonprofit event said only the early morning chill put a damper on the day.

"It's just a wonderful thing that they're doing for the population," Dan Atencio said as he sipped a cup of hot cocoa.

Atencio said he isn't a regular customer at the office, but attended the clinic's first free event in 2008 and decided it was time for a return visit. He was in line at about 7:30 a.m.

"It (a dental cleaning) is something I can't afford," he said. "I'm on Social Security."

Joshua and Julie Aikens said dental services such as cleanings normally cost about $150 for the couple and $300 for their four children.

"So for us it's a lot of money," Julie Aikens said. "Right now we're really tight. My husband just got a new job. We would not be at the dentist if it was not for this."

Joshua Aikens said the couple and their two oldest children were just receiving cleanings as preventative maintenance, but he had spoken with some people in the parking lot who had more serious problems.

Mayor Dan McArthur visited the event and praised the clinic for its community service, inviting waiting patients to find a way to "pay it forward" by giving of themselves to better the community.

"This is what makes St. George one the best places to live and raise a family," he said.

Scott Emett, who owns a dental lab, also participated with his country band, providing music for the crowds in the parking lot.

"I wanted to have some way to contribute with them," he said as the group set up drums and other equipment.

Scientists have found a clue to the origin of periodontal pain and dental surgical pain which may lead to more treatments or procedures to increase dental health.

The study, conducted at the Oregon Health & Science University's School of Dentistry, discovered a connection between a peptide know as Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and the development of the trigeminal nerve, a sensory nerve that is also involved in some motor functions such as biting, chewing and swallowing.

Because of that, the trigeminal nerve communicates periodontal pain and dental surgical pain to a person's brain.

The new research has found a relationship between the trigeminal nerve communications and with the peptide NGF, which promotes the transport of the sensory messages between the nerve cells.

"This study has broad implications for trigeminal nerve regeneration," said Dr Agnieszka Balkowiec, the senior author of the study.

Periodontal pain comes from a group of diseases that affect the tissues in the mouth providing support and anchor for teeth. If a person leaves the condition untreated, it can lead conditions such as Gingivitis and trench mouth.

Those interested in avoiding periodontal diseases may want to get regular dental care from their dentist to achieve optimal dental health.

The minimum age for piano lessons depends on the specific teacher - some take kids as young as 3 and some wait until they are 6 years old.

I love The Earth and go there regularly. The veggie burgers are awesome and I always get a small salad too- very yummy. They also do fresh juices if you need a vitamin fix.
